A few months back, William and I decided it was time to move Steven to his own bed. Our bed seemed crowded at times, we wanted space for ourselves in it. Steven had also gotten into the habit of waking up in the middle of the night and laying back down on top of my head (what?!). It was (obviously) uncomfortable for me, and when I moved him off of my head he would get upset — he wanted nothing more than to lay on my head! So, I would often end up spending the rest of the night in bed with one of his siblings.
He needed his own bed. But, we could not figure out where to put him. The other bed in his brother’s room (his future bed) was just too high – not safe or suitable for a 20 month old. Usually, we transition our children onto a cot on the floor of our room, but our room arrangement currently leaves little room on the floor for anything but walking between bed, dressers and doors (and a large pile of clothes beside William’s dresser!).
Finally, a few weeks ago, I came up with a solution. I pulled a futon mattress into our bedroom and found the perfect place, and it became Steven’s new bed. It is squashed between my side of the bed and the window. It is the coziest little spot, everyone in the house agrees. And, Steven loves it! He loves getting in bed in the evening and snuggling down on his pillow, under his quilt. He sleeps wonderfully there, often bathed in moonlight streaming through the windows.
I enjoy putting him down at night, in his own “bed”. My little baby is growing up and it is bittersweet and lovely.
